Pest-Type Service / Cockroaches

Cockroach control that treats the harbourage, not just the floor.

Cockroaches are the fastest way to fail a food inspection and one of the hardest pests to shift once they are established. They breed unseen in warm, hidden voids and spread disease every time they cross a surface. ASC controls them with targeted gel baiting and harbourage work, the method a food safety specialist trusts.

Why It Matters

Cockroaches are a disease vector, not just a nuisance.

Three cockroach species dominate South African premises. The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is the small, fast breeder that infests kitchens and equipment from the inside out. The American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) is the large reddish-brown species that comes up from drains, sumps and service ducts. The Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) is the dark, sluggish species tied to cool, damp basements and drains. All three shuttle between waste, drains and food, carrying pathogens on their bodies and depositing them wherever they walk. This is a public-health hazard first and an audit finding second.

Pathogen transfer

Cockroaches carry Salmonella, E. coli and other organisms from drains and waste onto food, utensils and surfaces, contaminating everything they touch.

Allergens & asthma

Their shed skins, droppings and body fragments are a recognised trigger for asthma and allergic reactions, especially in enclosed kitchens and staff areas.

Legal exposure

Regulation R638 of 2018 requires food premises to be free of pests and harbourage. Any insecticide used must be registered under Act 36 of 1947 and applied by a registered operator.

Rapid breeding

A single German cockroach ootheca carries dozens of nymphs. Left alone, a handful becomes an infestation in weeks, hidden until it is severe.

The ASC Cockroach Method

Find the harbourage, bait the source, prove it is gone.

Blanket spraying scatters a German cockroach colony deeper into the voids and coats food areas in chemical you do not want. Targeted gel baiting does the opposite: it draws the hidden population out to feed, then spreads through the colony by secondary transfer. Less chemical, better result, and nothing on your food-contact surfaces.

1. Inspection & ID

We identify the species, because a German infestation is treated differently from a drain-borne American or Oriental one. The species tells us where to look.

2. Monitoring traps

Sticky monitors map where the population is concentrated and catch the first sign of a new focus long before it spreads.

3. Targeted gel bait

Registered gel is placed precisely into cracks, hinges, motor housings and voids. Cockroaches feed and carry the active back to the colony.

4. Harbourage & hygiene

We close the cracks and voids, and advise on the drain hygiene, spillage and clutter that let cockroaches breed in the first place.

5. Trend & verify

Catch counts are trended by zone until the line falls to zero and stays there, giving your auditor documented proof of control.

Why A Food Safety Specialist Should Handle Your Cockroaches

We audit facilities for a living, so we control pests the way an auditor reads it.

ASC Pest Control is South Africa's only pest control company owned by accredited food safety specialists. That matters with cockroaches, because the difference between a temporary knockdown and lasting control is diligence: correct species identification, precise placement and honest verification. We care about the impact of chemicals on people, product and the environment, so we lead with least-toxic IPM, targeted gel rather than fogging, and prevention through harbourage and hygiene. The result is a programme built around the exact evidence a health inspector or a BRCGS auditor expects to see.

Questions

Cockroach control FAQ

Why do you use gel bait instead of spraying for cockroaches?

For German cockroaches, targeted gel bait outperforms blanket spraying. Cockroaches feed on the bait and carry the active back into cracks and voids, where secondary transfer reaches the hidden population you cannot spray. Spraying the open floor scatters the colony, drives it deeper and coats food-contact surfaces you do not want treated. Gel is placed precisely, uses far less active ingredient and keeps chemical away from food.

What are the health risks of cockroaches in a food premises?

Cockroaches move between drains, waste and food, carrying Salmonella, E. coli and other pathogens on their bodies and in their droppings. They contaminate surfaces and stock, taint food with an oily odour, and their shed skins and droppings trigger asthma and allergies. In a food business this is both a public-health hazard and a breach of Regulation R638 of 2018.

How do you find where cockroaches are breeding?

Species identification and monitoring locate the source. German cockroaches breed indoors in warm, humid harbourage near food and water; American and Oriental cockroaches point to drains, sumps and voids. We place monitoring traps to map activity, inspect the harbourage the species indicates, and treat the focus rather than chasing individuals across the floor.

How long does it take to clear a cockroach infestation?

A well-placed gel bait programme typically brings a German cockroach infestation down sharply within two to three weeks, with follow-up services to verify and close it out. Heavier infestations and drain-borne species take longer, which is why we monitor and trend catch counts until the line reaches and holds at zero.
