Why It Matters
Birds are a contamination and disease risk, not a decoration.
Two species cause most of the pressure on South African premises. The feral pigeon (Columba livia) roosts and nests on ledges, signage, roof voids and structural steel, and the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) gets inside warehouses, loading bays and high-bay racking. Their droppings foul everything below and their nests harbour a second wave of pests. Over a food intake, a dispatch bay or a walkway, that makes birds a direct public-health hazard, not merely an eyesore.
Disease
Bird droppings carry pathogens linked to conditions such as salmonellosis, ornithosis and cryptococcosis, and contaminate open food, surfaces and packaging directly.
Secondary pests
Nests and droppings harbour bird mites, ticks, carpet beetles and moths that then migrate into the building and become a pest problem of their own.
Fabric & safety
Acidic droppings corrode steelwork, cladding and machinery, block gutters, and create slip hazards on walkways and loading bays.
Legal & audit exposure
Regulation R638 of 2018 requires food premises to be free of pests and harbourage. Birds fouling over an intake are a serious audit and compliance finding.

Bird control that lasts is exclusion. Remove a flock without proofing the ledges and a new one takes the vacant roost within weeks. We survey the roosting and nesting points, match the right physical deterrent to each surface and pressure level, and cut off the food and water that drew the birds in. Every solution we specify is humane and non-lethal.
Bird netting
The most complete exclusion. Tensioned netting seals off whole facades, courtyards, canopies and internal roof voids so birds simply cannot enter or roost.
Bird spikes
Stainless spike systems on ledges, sills, signage and pipework remove the flat landing surface without harming the bird.
Post-and-wire & deterrents
Discreet tensioned wire and other humane deterrents for lighter pressure and sensitive facades where a low-visibility solution is needed.
Source removal
We identify and close the food, water and shelter that attracted the birds, from spillage to open waste to standing water.
Safe fouling clean-down
Accumulated droppings and nesting are removed and decontaminated under proper controls, protecting staff from the biohazard.

That is why our default is always humane, non-lethal exclusion: physical proofing that denies access to roosting and nesting sites without harming the birds. Why are birds a food safety and health risk?
Feral pigeons and sparrows are a contamination and disease risk, not just a mess. Their droppings carry pathogens linked to salmonellosis, ornithosis and cryptococcosis, and their nests harbour secondary pests such as bird mites, ticks, beetles and moths. Droppings foul walkways, machinery, product and packaging, contaminate open food areas and corrode building fabric. Under Regulation R638 of 2018 food premises must be free of pests and harbourage.
Is proofing better than trying to remove the birds?
Yes. Removing birds without proofing simply frees up roosting space for the next arrivals, so the problem returns.
