They are strongly site-loyal, so once a roost is established they return to it persistently, which is why scaring alone almost never works. A pair will breed several times a year given a stable ledge.
House sparrow (Passer domesticus)
Small, quick, and able to exploit gaps a pigeon cannot: a 30 mm hole in cladding, a gap above a roller door, the void behind a fascia. Sparrows nest inside the building rather than just roosting on it, and they are drawn straight to spilled grain, seed and product, making them a particular problem in mills, bakeries and animal feed plants. Their small size means proofing has to be genuinely tight; a spike system that stops pigeons will not stop sparrows.

Alongside the hardware, the housekeeping half of the job matters: remove the food source (spillage control, bin management, tight product storage), fit strip curtains and fast-action doors to close the entry points, and screen vents. Sonic and visual scaring devices and optical gels have a place as short-term or supplementary measures, but on their own they habituate quickly and rarely solve an established roost.
