Stored-product insects are the quiet infestation. There is no scurrying rodent to see, no cockroach in the light. There is a slowly building population of small beetles, weevils and moths living inside your raw material and in the dead spots your cleaning never reaches, and by the time you notice, it is often already in the finished product. In a mill, bakery or dry-goods warehouse these insects are the pest that most directly threatens the commodity itself, and they reward the facilities that monitor early and punish the ones that wait to see damage. Flour beetles and grain borers
Red flour beetle: Tribolium castaneum
The red flour beetle is the signature pest of mills and bakeries. It is a small (around 3 to 4mm), reddish-brown beetle that infests flour, meal and milled cereal products. It is a secondary pest, meaning it feeds on already-broken or milled material and on the residue in cracks and dead spots, and it breeds continuously in warm conditions. Its close relative, the confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum), behaves almost identically. Both taint product with their odour as well as their presence.
Lesser grain borer: Rhyzopertha dominica
The lesser grain borer is a small, dark, cylindrical beetle and a strong primary pest: the adults and larvae bore directly into whole, sound grain, reducing it to dust. It is a serious pest of stored wheat, maize and rice and a strong flier, so it spreads readily between stores.
Grain and rice weevils
The Sitophilus weevils are the classic internal feeders of whole grain. The rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae, and the grain weevil Sitophilus granarius, are small beetles with a distinctive long snout. The female drills into a grain kernel, lays an egg inside, and the larva develops entirely within the kernel, hidden from view, before the adult chews its way out. This internal development is why weevil infestations are so easily missed and so persistent: the damage is happening inside apparently sound grain. S. oryzae can fly and favours warmer conditions; S. granarius cannot fly and is a temperate-store pest, and both are found across South African grain handling.
Stored-product moths
Two moths dominate. The Mediterranean flour moth Ephestia kuehniella, is a pest of flour mills and bakeries; its larvae spin silk that mats and clumps flour and can block sifters and spouts. The Indianmeal moth Plodia interpunctella, is the most common warehouse moth, attacking a wide range of dried commodities including grain products, dried fruit, nuts and confectionery, and it too leaves tell-tale webbing. Pheromone monitoring: the early warning
The single most valuable tool against stored-product insects is the pheromone trap, and it is important to be clear about what it is: a species-specific monitor, not a treatment. Each trap is loaded with the pheromone of a target species, so a moth pheromone lure draws Ephestia and Plodia, and a beetle aggregation lure draws Tribolium. Distributed through the mill, bakery or warehouse, numbered, and counted every service, the traps do three things a random inspection cannot:
- Detect early. They catch adults weeks before you would see webbing or damage in product, when the population is still small and findable.
- Localise. A high count on one trap points you to the breeding source: the trap by the old silo leg, the one near a spillage under a conveyor.
- Trend. Counts over time show whether the population is rising or falling and whether your sanitation worked, exactly the trending expected under BRCGS and FSSC schemes.
Change the lures on the manufacturer's schedule, because a spent pheromone catches nothing while still looking active, and record every count and lure change so the programme is auditable.
Stock rotation and sanitation in dead spots
Stored-product insects breed in old, undisturbed product and in the residue that accumulates where you never clean. Deny them both and you remove the infestation's fuel. - First in, first out. Rigorous stock rotation is the foundation. The bag of flour or sack of grain that sits at the back for months is where a population establishes and matures. Date and rotate stock so nothing sits long enough to breed a generation.
- Clean the dead spots. The real battle is fought in the places milled residue collects and never gets swept: inside and under silo legs and boot pits, in sifter and spout dead ends, behind and beneath machinery, in cracked floors, roller-door tracks, pallet-racking joints and the gaps behind cladding. A handful of old flour in a machine cavity is a self-sustaining Tribolium colony. Deep-clean these on a schedule.
- Inspect incoming raw material. Insects arrive with the delivery. Check incoming grain, flour and dried goods, and quarantine or reject infested loads before they enter the store and seed everything else.

Fumigation as a last resort
Fumigation has its place, but it is the bottom of the hierarchy, not the top. It is a specialised, regulated operation in which a gaseous fumigant penetrates a commodity or a sealed structure to kill all life stages of the insects present, including the eggs and larvae hidden inside grain that surface sprays cannot reach. It is reserved for established infestations that monitoring, sanitation, stock rotation and disposal of infested product have failed to contain, or for clearing a commodity before it moves through the supply chain.
Fumigation is carried out only by a registered pest control operator using a fumigant registered under Act 36 of 1947, under strict safety, sealing and clearance controls, with the L-number and method recorded. The critical point for a quality manager is this: fumigation kills what is present but prevents nothing. A structure fumigated on Monday and left dirty is reinfested by the next generation that arrives or hatches. Fumigation only works when it is paired with the monitoring and sanitation that remove the reason the insects were there.
